1/5/2011: A Note from Pastor Obinson:
Often times we, builders, think, talk, plan, and act as if construction was a male enterprise and, consequently, are exclusive regarding women's participation and contribution. At the minute we think work-team we see men. If it's OK for self-sufficient organizations, but for missions and institutions like Haiti Active Evangelism and Macombre Christian Academy, that depends for the large part on prayers, one or many times donations and supports, it's quite different. For more than getting hands dirty it takes ideas, thoughts, devotion, creativity, charisma to get the job done. Those qualities, we believe, are unisex. Thanks Sarah for your hard work in fundraising for the school.
Indeed, the Macombre School had the privilege to host for 6 days, December 2 - 8, a women team from Pittsboro, Indiana, named "Women Haiti's Team", initiated and led by Kathy Land, who came to visit to see how they can best contribute to further the advancement of the work, especially to finish the school. The team was composed of: Martha Carter, Christy Williams, Karin Hume, Pamela Herrel, Cynthia Eaton, and evidently Kathy Land, the team leader. The positive impact of their presence and interaction with the people in the community was beyond expectation. Their commitment to continuously pray and raise necessary funds to complete the school building begin to bear fruits.
Once again, we want to extend many thanks to them for visiting, to their husbands for allowing them to be ahead of them, in spite of cholera threats. We also thank Rick Land for his priceless contribution without which the women's time would not be a success.
Thanks for reading us and for your commitment to support the Lord's work in Haiti.
Together in His service,
Obinson Joseph

Hello all,
We hope this letter finds everyone doing well, As our busy everyday lives seems to keep us on the run 24/7 I ask that you please take a minute to keep our Haitian friends and family in your prayers as they prepare for what could be another catastrophic blow from Hurricane Thomas this weekend. Warnings of eminent danger are being broadcast in Haiti as I type this e-mail. Reports are saying due to no other choice they will have to attempt to ride out this huge storm in their tattered and torn tent cities in which they have been living since the earthquake.
We would like to catch everyone up on some of the events which have taken place in the last few weeks, as well as new events coming up. The latest team of Rick Land, Craig Peoples, Dave Scudder, and Matt Johnson returned home from two weeks in Macombre Haiti last Wednesday night. (thanks guys for two weeks of hard work and sweat).
Pastor Obinson Joseph returned to Indiana with the team on Wednesday for a two week stay in Pittsboro. Obinson was given the opportunity to speak at Journey Church in Brownsburg on Sunday morning October 31st. Thank you for this opportunity. Pastor Obinson was also ask to be the guest speaker at last Monday nights fundraiser put on by the Tri-West Choir which raised over $400.00 for the ongoing work in Macombre. We would like to send a special thanks to Ms. Hahn, and member of the Pittsboro Methodist Church for organizing and putting together the whole evening, and to all the members of the choir for a great evening and job well done. Ms.Hahn along with Rick and Kathy Land will be taking five student from the Tri-West choir into Haiti over spring break.
We would like to congratulate the Pittsboro Christan Church gang for winning the first annual Creating Hope in Haiti scarecrow contest (strong work). Thanks Allen. Prize donated by the Pittsboro Pizzeria.
*** Pastor Obinson will be the guest speaker this Sunday, November 7th at Cornerstone Christian Church's mission Sunday. You and your family are invited to attend one of the two services at 9am and 10:30am. This would be a great opportunity to show our support to Pastor Obinson.
Fundraiser- TThe Creating Hope in Haiti silicone wrist bands will be in next weekend! We feel this is going to be a great way to raise funds for Haiti. We are asking that all of you as the Creating Hope in Haiti community help with this fundraiser. We will be selling these bracelets for $3.00 a piece, we would like to ask that everyone consider how they might help in this effort. We would like to get these into all of the schools, Churches, sports teams, clubs etc. Any help with this would be great. How cool would it be to see people in our community wearing these bracelets and knowing we are truly making a difference for Haiti. This offer is extended to our supporters in Illinois and California also :). Please shoot us back a quick e-mail and let us know how many you think you may need and we will get them to you. Its going to take all of us pulling together to make this a great success.
Remember to continue to pray for Haiti
God Bless

10/14/2010
Greetings to all,
At 4:30 this morning a team of local men were dropped off at the Indianapolis Airport to begin their journey back into Haiti to continue the help with the rebuilding of the Macombre School. Another member will also be joining them a week from today. Please remember to pray for these men over the next two weeks to have safe travel and the ability to do the things that need to be done. The project is moving ahead, and spirits are high. Your efforts are truly continuing to create hope in Haiti.
Each of you should have received a financial report from Obinson Joseph last week, this report shows only the funds received from CHiH. As reported, the nearly $31,000.00 raised to date has been wisely used and construction needs to continue. Last week upon requesting the monthly donation report, I am concerned to let all of you know, that for the first time since the forming of Creating Hope in Haiti, no new donations had been received. I ask that you stop and pray for this cause and continue to remember our dear friends in Haiti. Pray that we don't become so caught up in our own busy lives that we forget the desperation and needs of these beautiful people. As many of you may know there are several fundraisers scheduled in the very near future. There is a community scarecrow contest( find more information on the website) , wristband fundraiser (to begin as soon as the remainder of the support funds are collected), and possibly a concert by the Tri-West choir ( date to be announced). To all of you who make up Creating Hope in Haiti we are asking for your help to re energize these efforts.
There will be an all women's team traveling into Haiti, the first week of December. Right now it looks like we will also be trying to get together two of three teams for early February. If this is something you feel you would like to find out more about, please contact us here as soon as possible.
If you would, please take the time to send us a short e-mail letting us know you are continuing to pray for these efforts.
9/20/2010 News:
It is final, we are sending our first all-women team into Haiti on December 2 for a week. They are not going to preform hard labor or construct any buildings. Their mission is to get the feel for the Haitian struggles in the lives of teachers and students at Macombre schools as well as explore the hardships created from the devastating earthquake almost 9 months ago. None of the 4 ladies have ever visited Haiti, so they really can't compare the before and after like some of the seasoned visitors. This should bring new prespective to our fund-raising efforts to help the community of Macombre.
They will be visiting a nearby orphanage, tent cities, the open market, Haitian church, and many other aspects of Haitian life. Please keep the Lands and this group in your thoughts and prayers beginning now and throughout their trip. Pray that God might use them in a mighty way upon their return.
9/7/2010: Deposit made today in the amount of $2523.90, bringing our year to date total to $30,330.90, Thank you for your continued support. Remember there is a womens trip into Haiti in December, if you are interested please contact us at creatinghopeinhaiti@pittsborofire.org
8/30/2010: Deposit from the CHIH Festival for Macombre Christian Academy $8,149.29! Amazing! Thank you for making the event a great one. Let's get ready for next year! :)
8/13/2010: Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.....Thank you isn't enough for all those who showed up to the 1st annual CHIH Festival. Thank you to those who provided food, drinks, music, cooked ribs, worked kids games, ran the Cornhole, ran the Car Show, ran the Silent Auction, registered Motorcycles, worked the Haiti booth, sat in the Dunk Tank, Emcee, sat up and took down, and everything inbetween. Thank you to those who made donations, and for just coming out and enjoying the day with us. I believe that we raised over $7000 for the school that day. AMAZING! We will be having a meeting Monday night the 16th at 7p.m. at the Pittsboro Fire Station to talk about how we can improve the event for next year (last Saturday in July 2011). Hope to see you there! And THANKS AGAIN!!
8/13/2010: July deposits $550! Thank you for donating!
6/28/2010: Hello to all
I would like to start by saying thank you all for your support and continued prayers for all the teams who have traveled in and out of Haiti in the last three weeks. A lot of great things have taken place there. Despite the very hot conditions, and continued shaking of the ground, the teams associated with Creating Hope in Haiti were able the accomplish a lot. We have turned the corner from tearing out and cleaning up, to digging footers and starting the rebuilding phase. (by hand) This has been a huge boost to the community of Macombre. Please remember though, this is not a quick process and will need your continued commitment and financial support to complete.
If you are able, take a minute to reflect back to late January and remember the commitments we made and enthusiasm felt toward assisting and supporting the victims of the Haiti earthquake. We need to regain that enthusiasm. As time continues to pass, we sometimes fool ourselves into believing things must be getting better. I would just like to take a second to let you know that is the farthest from the truth. As I flew into the country all I could see was thousands, OK probably millions of blue plastic tarps, and already deteriorating tents covering the ground. As we drove out of the sweltering, trash covered city I realized things aren't getting better, I would have to say they are probably worse than the days immediately following the earthquake. Its pretty safe to say the media doesn't always tell the whole story. With the exception of a few U.N. soldiers here and there I really didn't see much of any assistance being given.
As a guy who has always thought he had his priorities pretty much in line, I am learning more day by day that's not the case. I am finding I spend more time worrying about and taking care of myself. (The me first syndrome.) When I should be worrying about how to take care of those in need and worrying about me last. I have never been truly hungry or homeless. I have never had to worry about my kids dying of starvation or from a very treatable disease just because I don't have access to basic treatment or prevention. We in the U.S.A have truly been blessed and continue to be blessed beyond our imaginations. We have so much to give, the hardest part is just having the faith to let go and do it, and the comfort in knowing you will be blessed for doing so.
Creating Hope in Haiti has a lot going on right now with the Haiti festival being planned for July 31st in the Pittsboro Park. I would like to ask for your help with this huge undertaking. (time is growing very short) If this is Gods will, this could be a great day for Haiti as well as for our communities to come together. Please take the time to get the word out to everyone you know, about this event. (face to face, e-mail, face book etc.) Lets make this the start of a great thing. Contact Sara Westrich at sarawestrich@hotmail.com to offer a helping hand. Also I would like to challenge each of you to consider becoming part of the Ten Men Project. This may seem like a pretty big commitment for some, but when you break it down it comes to a little over three dollars a day. I know I spend more than that each day for things I could easily give up, or don't really need. A very small price to pay to save human lives. To find out more about the Ten Men Project go the www.creatinghopeinhaiti.com.
In closing I would like to ask that if you run into one of the team members who have recently returned from Haiti that you give them a hug and welcome them home. I would like to personally say thanks to all of you for what you have done and continue to do for the beautiful people of Haiti. Greg Land
6/23/2010: Sorry for the lack of updates the last couple of weeks. Team one has been home from Haiti since the 14th, team two came home on the 22nd, Team 3 got into Haiti on the 21st and will be there for the week. (Pictures and video of the trip will be up on the "Home" page very soon.) A lot of hard work has been done, and progress is being made to get the new school underway. This was my first trip into Haiti, and it was life changing! I hope that anyone that is able will take the opportunity to visit Haiti, and the Macombre Christian Academy. Everyone there is so greatful for your help, and very glad to see us there! I can say first hand that your donations are changing the lives of about 800 amazing children, and a very greatful school staff, and community. Creating Hope in Haiti, is really creating hope for these wonderful people! I think that the July 31st Festival has the potential of being a huge fundraiser, please help out if you are able. Call or email me at sarawestrich@hotmail.com, 317-840-2075 if you or your group would like to take charge of one of the many activities going on that day. We still need someone to take over the Talent Show, and very soon, advertising and adutions need to be getting underway. Also advertising for the Motorcycle Ride (we have flyers, just need help getting the word out). This can be a huge event if we all do a small part! Thank you!!
6/23/2010: Deposits of $874.11, and $325.50, new total is $19,107.71! THANK YOU!

4/24/2010: Thank You from Obinson:
Dear Friends and faithful Partners,
Macombre Christian Academy and the Macombre Community needed your prayers, money, ideas, and your hands to go through the end of the cleaning process and the tents installation for our children to enjoy being back to school, we thank you so much for your commitment. But, we have more works ahead of us, as you all agreed, we need to build back. More than ever, we need and count on your prayers and generosity to do the Lord's work.
May we extend this time a special THANK YOU To:
The Samaritan's Purse, of which we can't say enough for their prompt response and intervention for the rubble clearance of the site.
Rick Land for his hard work at making the contacts that led to the rubble clearance of the school and the putting up of the tents that host our kids.
Rotary Club of Palakta, Florida, for providing the funds to cover the shipping cost of the tents
The Holding Hands 4 Haiti movement in Florida.
The Creating Hope in Haiti movement in Pittsboro, Indiana
The Parishioners of the St Andrew Catholic Church, NC, for being so generous to us.
All of our supporting churches and individuals in West Virginia, Indiana, North Carolina, Florida for their continuous financial support to the rebuilding project. We schedule to start with the job in June. We have several short term teems scheduled for the whole month of June, they will come to help as we need.
Together in His Service,
Obinson Joseph
4/23/2010: From Obinson:
The longest journey starts with one step.
Our goal for kids to get back to school was achieved on April 5, with % 80 of the expected attendance, which was increased up to % 90 by the end of the week. The children were overjoyed when they saw each other, well dressed in their uniforms, for the first time after the quake.
It's the result of hard work and determination of people like you. So we praise God and, on behalf of the school children and the entire community of Macombre, thank you so much for all you did and are doing to further the advancement of the rebuilding process. The journey is long, but since we have made several steps since the first one, lets continue the walk to the end, God is good, and won't forsake us.
Together in His service,
Obinson Joseph
4/19/2010: Deposit made today of $760, running total $7796 Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! To all that have donated!!! Keep praying for the Macombre Community, and Pastor Obinson! Your prayers, and donations are really helping to make GREAT things happen!!
4/15/2010: Letter update from Obinson!
All is well for us and the community. I have not been and am not able to use our new computers because the net company modem is not compatible with the windows 7 they came with. We need to install Windows vista or Xp before we can use them. We do have pictures of what is going on, we'll try to send some soon as we can use our friend's computer.
We started school last week with elementary and high school, kindergarten was scheduled for April 12. The attendance for the last week's groups went from 318 to 422 out of 512. And yesterday, April 12, for the whole school, kindergarten included, our attendance was 650 out 720. We also host some students from other schools that cannot open. All teachers are back to work. We thank everyone's effort, especially Rick Land, who always was the first one on spot and the last one to quit. We can't say enough about the tremendous job he did to make it happen. We are now building benches, black boards and desks for teachers. The materials cost is getting higher and higher day by day.
We extend our gratitude to the Pisttsboro Community for working that hard on their commitments to the Macombre community.
God bless!
Obinson Joseph
4/6/2010: Update from Rick... The old school is cleaned up, and they are waiting on Blue Prints for the new school from the University of Florida. As soon as they get those, the building process will begin! The water filtration system is up and running, suppling the school and Macombre community with 1000 to 2000 gallons of clean water a day. Tents are up and school was to start yesterday, haven't heard yet if it did for sure start then, but we should have an update with pictures very soon. Obinson has a new computer, so communication with him will be much better now.
4/6/2010: CNN will be running a special tonight with Anderson Cooper about Haiti. NBC also has a member in Haiti this week and is giving daily updates about the progress in the country.
4/5/2010: Updated deposit, our group added another $600 in donations for Obinson, for a total of $7036
3/24/2010: Letter from Pastor Obinson.

Hello Friends,
While we were waiting with impatience for the fufillment of many promises of help to clean the school of tons of debris and rubbles, last week God lead us to the Samaritain's Purse crew, who is doing a fantastic job in rubble clearance in Haiti. Rick Land, who is of a big help in getting things ready for both temporary and permanent structures for the school, met a heavy equipement driver at one of the gas stations in our area who directed him to the head of the precited organization. 3 hours later they came to the school for evaluation that resulted in a job completely done in 4 days to our greatest satisfaction. Now the school site is clean and ready for whatever work we project to do. As for now we are erecting some tents donated by USAID through the Samaritain's Purse to host our ongoing feeding program and the classes we have been having since this month. We cannot thank them enough.
In the meantime, the peace of land we newly bought to host the high school is ready for tent setting for the opening of April 5th.
Spiritual progress is made in the churches. Blanchard Church, where I preached last Sunday, presented 8 new born christians who were baptized last week. Several others are on the list for baptism soon at Boucan Carre and 2nd Tiboukan.
Prayer request for Clarnel Jean, one of our devoted teachers who lost his mom and one sister; the former passed away yesterday (March 22), the later today (March 23). Also for one family at Boucan on the death of one in the family.
Saniel Deliat, the preacher at the Bois-Aube Church, extends his deepest gratitude for the financial support of $ 80 sent this month.
As you knew it, my computer broke, so is Sophie's. it's really difficult to email, hope you understand. Thanks for deposits

3/22/2010: Update from Kathy!
I spoke to Rick via phone Saturday. Because Obinson's computer died, we are not able to communicate often. Rick sounded excited because he has connected with Samaritan's Purse, Franklin Graham's organization. They have cleared the Macombre school yard of debri, so Obinson is ready to put up the tents and start school on April 3rd. Rick has also been promised that they will clear the ruble at Epiphany Church (our most recent church) and much of the ruble at Christianville. This means so much to us, since these are all places where we helped to build over the last 20 years. I firmly believe that this is Rick's shining moment and that the past 20 years was simply a training ground for this point in time. Now he has all the skills to assist in the monumental recovery of Haiti's worst moment. He has the cultural, language, and building skills to be the best man on the ground right now. Please pray that God will use this "Pittsboro farm boy" to make a small difference for the world's suffering people. He represents you all so well, and I am very proud of him. I am sure he will be making many trips to Haiti in the future, so if you want to join up for a trip, be making plans now.
I asked him how Obinson's holding up. He said he is very excited about the future. He too is the right man on the ground for such a time as this. His maturity and integrity is the cornerstone of the community of Macombe. He is encouraged because he knows there is a whole town in Indiana supporting him. He knows his school will be built again, even better than before. He will forever be indebted to each contributor to the Haiti fund. He, like most of the people around him, is still living in a tent, afraid to sleep inside a building. In time, the fear will subside and life will get back to normal.
Thank you all from Rick and I. We are more proud of our community now than ever before. May God shower our town with blessings!
Kathy Land
3/17/2010: Update from Wayne and Judy from Outreach International, they made a deposit for Obinson from our group in the amount of $4490, for a running total of $6436! A big thank you to all who are donating!!
3/17/2010: Very good news! Samaritan's Purse came in as promised and cleaned up debris from the school! We have a small group that will be heading into Macombre, Haiti in June! Good things are happening!
3/16/2010: Samaritan's Purse met with Rick, they will be the ones to come in with heavy machinery, and clear the debris that was once the school. He has decided that a small group of hard workers will be best used sometime in June. If you are interested in a mission trip (possibly the second week of June) please let us know.
3/15/2010:
Hi Sara and friends,
I just spoke with Rick in Haiti. After his disappointment with the Canadians, he was excited when a US Army official came by and couldn't believe nothing had been accomplished by the Canadian forces and pledged to bring equipment out and clean up debri so that the school could move forward. Time will tell if we will be disappointed once again. Pastor Obinson is planning on re-starting at least some classes by April 1st, using tents. He is committed to not losing this year for his students, they have been through enough already without having to make up another year of school.
Rick also received good news from an organization that installs water purification systems. Malcombre Academy was selected as a site. This will provide about 1,000 to 2,000 gallons a day of fresh drinking water for the school and the community. Fantastic news!
Please pray for Obinson, who must be running on borrowed energy. Rick is afraid he needs some immediate support, considering the immense work that lies ahead, so he is planning a work group that might go back the middle of April with him. Men, if you can get away for 7-10 days, are in good health (no medical facilities or 911), and want to help please call Greg Land or Craig Peoples who are putting together arrangements.
Obinson's laptop has crashed, so please be patient with e-mails and new photos. Anyone who can get him a new one, please contact Kathy via e-mail at landsinhaiti@yahoo.com
We are so proud of our community and the response you all have given towards restoring this school and village. We will try to keep you informed of needs and progress. Do not grow weary in giving, as this will not be a quick fix. We are fortunate to assure you that 100% of your contribution will go toward rebuilding. Many thanks to Sara and all of you who are donating many hours of love to the precious, innocent people of Haiti. May we never fail to remember to give thanks that we were born in the US!
With love, Kathy Land
3/13/2010: Rick Land has been in Macombre, Haiti for a few days. He said that conditions are not good, and the help from the Canadian Military that they were counting on will not be happening now. The US Military will be pulling out of the country by the end of the month, and the Canadian Military will pull out in a day or two.
They are still waiting on the tents to arrive, in hopes to start back to school on April 5th. Please keep our friends from Haiti in your prayers...they need us more now then ever!
3/5/2010: We are very happy to update that Outreach International has recieved $1,946 in donations in a short period of time from donors in our community. We will be getting updates from them twice a month, and should have a new update very soon. Check back here to see our progress.
3/3/2010: Obinison made a very long trip home over a two day period, but he made it there safely. We are so thankful for the opportunity to have had him here, and very happy that he was able to talk to many of you. Please keep Obinson and what he is doing in your prayers!
Blessings that have been met:
*We are so excited to announce that 200 commercial size tents have been donated to the Macombre community!! We are currently working on getting the tents into the country and to Macombre
